Birding Far North Queensland

Six of us drove the 35 minutes from Kingfisher Park Birdwatchers Lodge, Julatten, up to the 950m clearing on Mt. Lewis. Here we were hoping to find some of the notable higher rainforest species of birds such as Fernwren, Atherton Scrubwren, Golden Bowerbird, Tooth-billed Bowerbird and Blue-faced Parrot-Finch. This area is famous for its variety of plant and other wildlife, much of which is unique to this mountain area. We found most of the birds we were looking for apart from Golden Bowerbird. Most interest was for the Blue-faced Parrot-Finch as we found at least 12 birds which was the most reported so far this season (from Nov to April). In the rainforest adjacent to one of the many creeks which tumble off Mt. Lewis we found three Giant Rockmaster Diphlebia hybrioides, a rather pretty Damselfly, this was a first for us, also found some Tropical Flatwing Austroargiolestes aureus another first. Managed a few images as they darted around chasing each other. Another productive morning in one of the most special places in Australia.
